Thornton in Times Past
A must for anyone interested in the Brontë family who attended the small church which is now a picturesque ruin.
First published in 1987 by Countryside Books of Chorley in Lancashire, this pictorial record of Thornton soon established itself as a hit with those interested in the Bronte family, not least because here, to this small wind-swept West Yorkshire village on the outskirts of Bradford came the Reverend Patrick Bronte in 1815, and here was born the most famous of that literary family, Anne, Branwell, Charlotte and Emily, who were all baptised in the small chapel which today survives as a picturesque ruin. But the story of Thornton does not just begin at this point. The origins of the village goes back to the Doomsday book and beyond, and prehistoric burial mounds have been discovered here. There was supposedly a castle at one time, and the industrial revolution left its mark on the place.
Proving popular, this book was reprinted in 2003 and is the second book on this village by the author.
