A Phoenix Rising

This relates the roller-coaster story of Hardye’s School in Dorchester, Dorset for the 400+ years from when it was built until it closed in 1992.

A Phoenix Rising Book Cover During the reign of Elizabeth I the merchants and skilled craftsmen in Dorchester, Dorset decided that they wanted a school to replace the Friary School which was swept away in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries decreed by Henry VII. They wanted their children to enjoy the education opportunities hitherto only enjoyed by their ‘betters’ – the upper classes. ‘A Phoenix Rising’ relates the roller-coaster story of the school, known for most of its life as Hardye’s, for the next 400+ years until it was closed in 1992. In that time it has nurtured pupils who became noted figures in politics, art, music, drama, the professions, sports, the media and the armed services.
